Sushi, a backstory
As said earlier, sushi is a famous Japanese dish that is enjoyed worldwide. You will find three main varieties of sushi- maki, nigiri, and sashimi. All three variants are different from each other for the ingredients, cooking style, and presentation.
The maki sushi is mainly wrapped in seaweed, nigiri is made of pressed rice with a slice of raw fish on top, and sashimi only comes with a piece of raw fish.
Sushi has an interesting origin story. Earlier, sushi was a form of preserving fish in Japan. In this method, a piece of gutted fish was wrapped in rice which kept the fish good for eating for several months.
The wrapped rice was thrown away, and the fish was eaten with freshly cooked rice. This was a Japanese staple food called nare-sushi. This nare-sushi evolved over time and became the famous dish sushi, although authentic nare-sushi is still eaten by Japanese people.
Can you reheat sushi?
The straightway answer to this is yes; you can reheat sushi. So if you are in love with this Japanese dish and want to keep stock to grab some whenever you like, keep them without any guilt.
Traditional cooking methods do not approve of reheating the sushi as the raw ingredients are supposed to be eaten as it is. But while the raw ingredients are served cold in restaurants as well, the rice is always served at room temperature.
Hence, you can taste it best when it is slightly reheated. You can reheat sushi using a microwave; it will only take a few seconds.
How to reheat sushi?
Want to make your sushi taste as good as it was served in the restaurant? If yes, try out these reheating hacks. They will surely bring back the authentic taste of sushi and let you enjoy this delicacy.
The best way to reheat sushi is in a microwave. All you have to do is:
- Put the sushi on a microwave-safe plate
- Place them in the microwave and heat them for thirty seconds at 500-watt power, and your sushi is ready to eat!
By far, this only reheating method has been approved and used for reheating sushi. The raw ingredients in sushi and the cooking procedure of this dish generally don’t allow reheating in any other procedure.
The mild heating of the sushi in a microwave does not ruin the vinegared rice and makes it soft, just like when it was freshly made.
The toppings, for example, tuna toppings, also become much tastier and juicy after the mild reheating. But make sure you don’t leave the sushi in the microwave for too long. This will only ruin the ingredients and rice.
How does microwaving/reheating sushi affect the ingredients?
Great-tasting sushi is a perfect balance of vinegared rice, fish, or other ingredients. It won’t taste best if one ingredient is at its best texture and taste and the other is not. Therefore, you should know how reheating would change or affect the ingredients in sushi.
- Sushi rice
When sushi is served at the restaurant, it is always at room temperature. When you have leftover sushi or buy it from the grocery store, the rice is cold and dry. Having this cold sushi rice would taste bland and lose its texture.
When you reheat it, the rice turns fluffy and soft again. It regains its lost texture back and tastes much better.
- Sushi fish
Many people question reheating sushi with raw fish in it as sushi tastes best with the taste of raw fish. However, even at restaurants, cold raw fish sushi is not served. When a chef prepares sushi at a restaurant, his hands warm up the fish.
So you get hand-warmed fish with the sushi. Reheating the sushi in the microwave for thirty seconds will give the same results as hand heating. The mild heating will soften the cold fish a little bit, making it taste like freshly made.
- Sushi vegetables
Sushi has so many vegetables like- bell paper, avocado, cucumber, sweet potato, carrots, asparagus, etc. Unfortunately, once the sushi gets cold, no amount of reheating can revive the vegetables’ actual taste.
The vegetables in the sushi are eaten raw to preserve the crunchiness and fresh taste of it. If the vegetables get soggy, they won’t taste like before.
How to store leftovers?
To prevent the sushi from getting ruined, it is important to store it at the right temperature. Due to the presence of raw ingredients in it, it can grow bacteria if it’s not stored at the proper temperature.
The right refrigerator temperature to store sushi is around 40°F or 4°C. You should keep it in an airtight container or the box you got from the store or restaurant.
For how long can you store leftover sushi?
Leftover sushi is best to store for a maximum of twenty-four hours or one day. Sushi contains ingredients like vinegared rice, raw fish, and raw vegetables that rapidly change their texture with time.
Also, note that during the preserving time, the sushi might change its actual taste due to the ingredients in it. Keeping it in the refrigerator for one day won’t make much of a difference and will be good for consumption.
Having said that, regardless of temperature, sushi might go bad in the refrigerator as well. So before eating leftover sushi, don’t forget to check its smell and color. If the sushi smells acidic and looks very dull, refrain from eating it.
