Why You Should Preheat Your Oven

Like I have mentioned before, preheating your oven ensures that your food will be cooked thoroughly within a recipe’s specific cooking time.

When preheating an oven, what you would want to happen it to heat every part of your oven’s insides including the racks, walls, floor, and door until it reaches the required cooking temperature.

When this happens, the cold spots in your oven will completely be eliminated, making for an evenly heated enclosure that’s good for your food.

However, preheating your oven to the set temperature doesn’t mean that your oven will cook your food with the starting temperature that you have set. The food you put in the oven can heavily affect the heat inside of your oven because food can soak up heat real quick.

There’s also the fact that heat escapes from the oven once you open its doors as you put in your food.

As a solution to this, I suggest preheating your oven a couple of degrees higher than the recipe’s required temperature, and once you put your food in, you can simply turn back the dial to the required temperature until your food is completely cooked.

Preparing Your Oven

Now that you know the reason behind preheating an oven, you should now know how to prepare your oven before using it for cooking.

Once your oven has been fully preheated, all the materials inside it will be too hot to handle. This means that you should get your oven ready beforehand for a seamless cooking experience.

Before you preheat your oven you should make sure that it is completely empty. If you store baking trays in your oven, you should remove them and store them away.

Next thing you should do is adjust your racks. Depending on your dish, you might have to place your racks higher or lower in the oven.

If the food you are cooking needs to have a crispy top, you should put your racks at the top part of your oven. As for foods that need to be soft, you should place your rack in the middle part of the oven.

But if you are cooking pizzas or other food that need to have a crispy bottom, you should place your rack near the bottom part of the oven.

For your safeness when baking and preheating your oven, I suggest you use a pair of oven mitts. You can learn about how to choose the most suitable oven mitts for you in this article: best oven mitts.

Preheating An Electrical Oven

Electrical ovens usually take 10 to 15 minutes to be preheated. However, all ovens are made different, which means that your oven may or may not fall within the 10 to 15 minute range.

Unless your oven comes with a built in thermometer that tells you the temperature inside your oven, you may want to use an oven thermometer to determine your oven’s temperature.

To preheat your oven, simply turn it on and set the dial to the required temperature, and wait for 10 to 15 minutes.

Preheating A Gas Oven

A gas oven takes a shorter time to completely get hot. However, since gas ovens emit more fumes, you must be more cautious when firing it up. In taking proper precaution, you should make sure that your kitchen is well ventilated before you start preheating your gas oven.

Gas ovens usually take only 5 to 10 minutes to preheat, but as I have mentioned before, you may need to refer to your oven’s built in thermometer or an external oven thermometer just to make sure that the temperature inside your oven is exactly as you required.

To preheat your gas oven, simply fire up the pilot light and close the oven doors before you set the dial to the required temperature and wait for 5 to 10 minutes.

If your gas oven is electrically ignited, you can start preheating your oven by directly turning the dial to the temperature you wish to set.
