What You’ll Need

Buttermilk Biscuit Dough

What You’ll Need

Making your own biscuit dough can be a bit difficult especially if you’re a beginner. For convenience, you can use a premade biscuit dough that are available in grocery stores. In this recipe, prepare two cans of buttermilk biscuit dough.

Sugar

What You’ll Need

In this recipe, you’ll need three types of sugar: granulated, brown, and powdered. You’ll need 1/4 cup granulated sugar for the cinnamon coating and another tablespoon for the cream cheese mixture. To make the butter sauce, you’ll need about 1 cup of brown sugar. For the glaze, a tablespoon of powdered sugar will be needed.

Granulated sugar has fine granules that are perfect to sprinkle onto food since they don’t cake together. Brown sugar is actually just white sugar with the cane molasses still intact. Powdered sugar, on the other hand, has finer granules than granulated sugar.

Cinnamon

What You’ll Need

One of the most notable characteristics of a monkey bread is the cinnamon flavor. Cinnamon is a common baking spice used primarily for flavoring. In this recipe, you’ll need a tablespoon of cinnamon to coat the biscuits with the sugar.

Ground Nutmeg (Optional)

What You’ll Need

Nutmeg can enhance the flavor of your monkey bread by adding a hint of sweetness and complex blend of warmth and spice. For optimum flavor, you can purchase a whole nutmeg and grate it. You only need about a pinch of nutmeg to add flavor to your cinnamon-sugar mix.

Softened Cream Cheese

What You’ll Need

A softened cream cheese will add creaminess to your biscuits. You need to use four ounces of cream cheese. To softened the cream cheese, heat in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.

Cream cheese is often sold in bricks and tubs. For best results, use cream cheese in bricks as they’re more formulated for baking. However, if all you have is a cream cheese in a tub, then you may go ahead and use it.

Blueberries

What You’ll Need

The ingredients that make this recipe distinct over other monkey bread recipes are blueberries. These fruits give a fruity twist to classic monkey bread. You may need to prepare about one cup of blueberries.

Not only are blueberries delicious, but they’re also healthy as they can help enhance your memory and help inhibit the development of any cognitive problems linked with aging. To select the sweetest blueberries, look for large firm fruits with a nice even color. The berries should be firm to the touch, but not rock-hard, and plump.

If you can’t find any fresh blueberries anywhere, you can buy the frozen kind in the frozen food sections of grocery stores. They’re usually packaged in boxes or poly bags. When you lift a bag of frozen berries, they shouldn’t be clustered together.

Butter

What You’ll Need

A good pastry relies on butter for that tender, flavorful, and creamy taste. For the brown sugar sauce, you need to add two sticks of unsalted butter. Although you can use the salted kind, it sometimes gives a rancid taste to the baked good.

Lemon Juice

What You’ll Need

To make the glaze, use one teaspoon of lemon juice. The citrus flavor of lemon complements well to the natural sweetness of the butter-brown sugar sauce. To prepare the lemon juice, simply squeeze half of a lemon.

Milk

What You’ll Need

Along with the lemon juice and powdered sugar, you need about three tablespoons of milk. If you like a richer and creamier taste, use whole milk, however, if you’re on a low-fat diet, choose low-fat milk. Alternatively, you can use half & half cream.

Equipment And Utensils

Scissors

To cut your biscuits into quarters, you need to use a good pair of kitchen scissors. Make sure that the blades are free from rust and corrosion because you don’t want to be imparting any metallic substances into your bread.

Bowls

You need several bowls to serve as containers for your several mixes. To be specific, you need three bowls, one for your biscuit quarters, another for your cinnamon-sugar mixture, and the third one's for your cream cheese mixture. You can use any available bowls you have at home.

Silicone Spatula

A silicone spatula comes handy in several tasks, like mixing ingredients, emptying bowls, and cooking. Compared to a rubber spatula, a silicone spatula is more flexible, heat-resistant, and doesn’t discolor. If you have no silicone spatula, you can use a spoon instead.

Saucepan

To make your butter-brown sugar sauce, you need a saucepan. Any material of saucepan will do; whether aluminum, stainless steel, or copper. If you have no saucepan in your kitchen, you can use any cookware.

Bundt Pan

To give that distinctive ring shape, you’ll need a bundt pan to bake your bread. If you like to make an even-baked bread, avoid using dark pans. Also, make sure you use one that's non-stick.

Nonstick Cooking Spray

If your bundt pan doesn’t have a nonstick finish, then it’s necessary that you grease it with a nonstick cooking spray so your bread won’t stick. Even if your bundt pan has a nonstick finish, it doesn’t hurt to use a nonstick cooking spray to be sure.

Serving Plate

After your monkey bread is done cooking, you can transfer it into a serving plate of your choice. If you like to give a good presentation, you can use a pedestal cake plate. However, if you don’t mind the design, you can use any regular plate.

The Procedure: How To Make Blueberry Monkey Bread

1. Prepare The Biscuit Dough And Coat

In a bowl, cut the biscuit dough into quarters using your scissors. Set aside. In another bowl, mix 1/4 cup granulated sugar, one tablespoon cinnamon, and a pinch of freshly ground nutmeg. Using a rubber spatula, give everything a quick mix. Next, place the biscuit quarters into the bowl of cinnamon mixture and coat them using your hands.

2. Make The Cream Cheese Mixture

In a shallow bowl, place the melted cream cheese and a tablespoon of granulated sugar. Use the silicone spatula to mix the ingredients together. You want the cream cheese to be soft so you can spread it easily and to mix well with the sugar.

Now, add the blueberries. You may not mix the whole cup of blueberries into the cream because you can throw in more blueberries later.

3. Cook The Butter Sauce

In a saucepan, throw in two sticks of unsalted butter and one cup of brown sugar. Cook over medium-low heat for about 10 minutes or until the brown sugar has fully dissolved. Stir frequently using your silicone spatula.

4. Assemble The Blueberry Monkey Bread

First, grease the bundt pan with the nonstick cooking spray. Make sure that you have all the interior of the pan covered. Next, place half of the coated biscuits into the pan. Using the spatula, spread the cream cheese mixture into the biscuits forming a second layer of the monkey bread. Throw in half of the remaining blueberries that you set aside.

Now, layer the remaining coated biscuits on top of the cream cheese mixture. Pour the butter sauce over the biscuits and throw in the last remaining blueberries on top.

5. Bake And Serve

In a preheated oven, bake the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 35 minutes. Once the bread is done, remove from the oven and cool for about five minutes. With the serving plate of your choice, flip the bundt pan over.

For presentation, drizzle the top with a glaze that is made of one tablespoon powdered sugar, one tablespoon lemon juice, and three tablespoons milk. Serve and enjoy while hot.

Additional Tips To Remember

1. Soften Cream Cheese On 50% Power

To soften cream cheese in the microwave, The Spruce suggests using only 50% of power. If you’re using a 3-ounce block, cook for about 30 seconds. You might need 60 seconds to soften an 8-ounce block of cream cheese. Before using, let the softened cream cheese rest for about a minute.

2. Watch Butter Carefully

Melting butter in the stovetop needs careful attention because it can easily get burn. The Dairy Farmers of Canada suggests removing the butter from heat when three-quarters of its contents are already melted. You can continue stirring until the butter is fully melted. You may also consider melting the butter in a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat.
