What Is An Electric Knife Sharpener?

An electric knife sharpener is usually used by chefs to sharpen the blade of their knives. Instead of using the traditional whetstone, electric sharpeners usually work in 3 stages - grinding, smoothing, and polishing. If you see an electric knife sharpener, you’ll notice that it is shaped like a box with slots allotted for motorized grinding wheels.

To learn how to use an electric knife sharpener properly, watch it here.

As compared to its manual counterpart, it is faster and more convenient. This is because you don’t need any special skill to operate this equipment. All you have to do is insert the knife into the slot and hold it while the machine does the sharpening for you.

Benefits Of Using An Electric Knife Sharpener

Thanks to electric knife sharpeners, you can sharpen dull knives easily and quickly. Here are some of the benefits that you can expect from using an electric knife sharpener at home.

1. Ease Of Use

Unlike a manual knife sharpener, wherein you have to keep the right amount of pressure to hold the knife at a certain angle, an electric knife sharpener only requires you to draw the blade into the slot and leave the sharpening work into your machine. There’s also no need to use any lubricant.

2. Fast Results

You don’t need to spend a lot of time sharpening a knife with this machine because all it takes is just a matter of 5-10 minutes to get a very sharp edge. The time spent is less as compared to manual knife sharpeners which usually take at least half an hour.

3. Saves Professional Costs

Before, I used to send my knives to be sharpened by professionals as I don’t have the skill and time to do it with a traditional sharpening stone. These professionals usually charge $7-$12 per knife which could be really costly if you have to sharpen more than one knife.

With an electric knife sharpener, you can save the money from all these services and still get the same knife sharpening results.

What To Look For For

When it comes to choosing for the best electric knife sharpener, here are the features that you should consider:

1. Multiple Knife Blade Slots

An electric knife sharpener typically has 3 blade slots to sharpen the edge of the blade perfectly. The first stage normally grinds the blade to remove any debris. The second stage smooths out the knife while the third stage polishes the blade.

Although one slot is adequately functional, having more than one slot is ideal for sharpening various types of knives such as serrated and non-serrated ones. The multiple slots may also offer various angles at which to sharpen the edge of blades.

2. Warranty

Most buyers overlook this feature, but this may be important if you want to extend the life of your device.

If a product offers a warranty, it means that you can get it repaired for free within the given duration. A longer warranty also indicates durability of the product as the manufacturer is confident to set a certain period of free repair and service.

3. Great Performance

If you aim for performance, look for features that generate a consistently smooth and sharp edge. For instance, a Trizor Edge is a great feature in making blade twice as sharp as a razor. This feature also helps prolong the life of your knife even longer than professional edges.

4. A Precise, Adjustable Angle Guide

To reduce all guesswork, a precise, adjustable angle guide makes sharpening efficient and fast. The best knife sharpener should be flexible to accommodate various blade angles, most importantly, 15 and 20 degrees.

5. A Solid, Abrasive Surface

To remove all debris and damage from the blade efficiently, the abrasive surface should be hard. Ideally, a diamond abrasive works well in sharpening and honing the blade. The next best materials are tungsten carbide and ceramic.

Thanks for sharing your top 5 electric knife sharpeners. One other thing I thought I’d mention for anyone who is looking for an electric knife sharpener, is that they should make sure they check the voltage rating of the unit before buying. Many American brands like Chef’s Choice are all rated for 110V, but this may not match the voltage of your area (for you folks living in 240V regions). Please check this before you buy!! Thanks again Paula!
